18 Things I’ve Learned in 18 Years

Hey guys! November 26 is my birthday and I wanted to share some of my favorite quotes and things I’ve learned in 18 years. I don’t know if I’m qualified to do that, but I’m going to make an attempt lol. I can’t believe I am 18 though. Time really does fly and it is important to enjoy it while it lasts.

1. Don’t let others control your decisions because it is impossible to reach your full potential.

Since I was a younger kid, I always worried about what people thought of me and truly everyone does that. I have tried this year to try to focus more on what I want in life and live the life I want to live.

2. “I Believe in the person, I want to become”

I heard this statement from the Lana Del Rey, “Ride” music video and I have been thinking about it a lot recently. I hope that as I get older, I start seeing the hard work I have put in come to life because I have spent an immense amount of effort on the things I believe in.

3.  Live in the present

I have such a difficult time living in the moment and I have tried to spend more time relaxing.

4. Zodiac signs are a guidebook, not a rule book.

In the past year I’ve started reading my Costar and I think it is fun to read and all, but I have to remind myself that it isn’t 100% accurate.

5. “Didn’t anyone ever tell you it’s ok to shine?”

Lana Del Rey said it best.

6. You don’t have to be perfect

I am pretty OCD when it comes to having an aesthetic or just trying to appear to be the best version of myself 24/7 and it is impossible to do that. It is important to just try to be who you are in the present and improve yourself from there.

7. Relationships are like spider webs

I heard this in my 8th grade English class and it has stuck with me. Friends can walk in and out of your life in an instant. Friendships take time to make, but they can fall apart in an instant.

8. “Success is counted sweetest”

This is from a poem by Emily Dickinson. I haven’t been that successful in my life, but I have to remind myself that all my hard work will pay off in the future.

9. Live and let live

Stating this simply, just be authentic to yourself and to others.

10. “Burn every bridge except the one that leads you to your greatest desire”

I read this quote by Lana Del Rey in a Rolling Stones magazine and it instantly resonated with me. No matter what your passion is, if you care enough you will do what you have to do to succeed.

11. Don’t be too ambitious

At points in my life I have been a bit too ambitious, which has led to me losing friends. Thankfully, I have learned that there is a time and place for work and social life and it is imperative to create boundaries between the two.

12. “I never really noticed that I had to decide / To play someone’s game or live my own life”

This is one of my most favorite quotes of all time. I have chosen to take a not so traditional path compared to the other kids where I live and I value these lyrics. You have a decision to be yourself or be a character.

13. Trust yourself

I wish I could do this more often. It is so difficult being a teenager sometimes and I hope that in the future I will learn to just relax.

14. The tide always comes back

Part of the human experience is loss, failure, and sadness, but thankfully we have grace and have a second chance to improve.

15. If you love someone, do what is best for them

Whether it’s a friend or a romantic interest, I’ve learned to try to make the greatest amount of people happy.

16. “It’s never too late to be who you want to be”

Better late than never!

17. “If you don’t get it then forget it”

If someone doesn’t care about your opinion, it isn’t worth the energy to try to explain it

18. “Happiness if a butterfly”

Apologies for all the Lana song lyrics, but they are so meaningful. Happiness comes and goes, but it is important to live in the moment while it is there.

BONUS!

“Nothing gold can stay”

All good things come to an end and Robert Frost said it short and sweet.

Thank you all for the support over the years. I hope that this helped you to get to know me better. I plan on writing more posts about similar topics to this because I enjoy song analysis and writing my current feelings to encourage someone else.
